Potential students

PhD students opportunities:

I am actively looking for motivated and talented PhD students to join my group. If you are interested in pursuing research in the field of Numerical Analysis or Computational and Applied Mathematics, please see below my current research topics as well as the basic requirements, and contact me at  luan@math.msstate.edu.

Research Topics: Numerical analysis of time-dependent PDEs, in particular developing new advanced time integration methods for multiphysics differential equations and for application models in meteorology (numerical weather prediction), computational fluid dynamics, computational biology, and visual computing. Currently, my group is working on the following innovative time integration methods: Exponential Integrators and Multirate Integrators. For more details, please visit Research.

 Required Documents:

  1. Cover letter: describe research interests, indicate the desired research and its alignment with some of the topics mentioned above.
  2. CV: including a list of previous scientific expertise, skills, and publications (if applicable).
  3. Copies of transcripts of records of Bachelor and Master study (if applicable).
  4. Two/three letters of recommendation.
  5. A copy of BSc thesis or MSc thesis in Mathematics, Computational Mathematics, or Applied Mathematics (if applicable; having a Master’s degree is a plus
  6. [For international applicants only] Proof of fluency in English: a minimum TOEFL iBT score of 84 or IELTS minimum score of 6.5.
  7. A satisfactory GRE score (currently waived by MSU).

Some information about Mississippi State University (MSU):

  • MSU was founded in 1878. MSU ranks in the top 100 public universities in the US, classified at the R1 highest research activity level, and is Mississippi’s leading research university, see link. MSU has a student population of over 23,000, studying in over 180 degree programs in a wide range of academic fields.

  • MSU is located in Starkville which is a city in east central Mississippi. It is the most populous city of the Golden Triangle region of Mississippi. Driving (by car) from Starkville takes about 2.5 hours to Memphis, TN; about 2.5 hours to Birmingham, AL; about 4.5 hours to Atlanta, GA, and about 4.5 hours to New Orleans, LA.

  • MSU remains Mississippi’s top research university in latest NSF survey, see link.

  • MSU ranks 4th in U.S. academia for supercomputing power: see link.

  • MSU’s stadium has a seating capacity of 60311 people on a game day:
